Nestled in the western part of Uganda, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Semuliki National Park is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Despite being one of the country’s newest and least-known national parks, Semuliki boasts a diverse range of landscapes, wildlife, and attractions that make it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers.
Geography and Landscape
The park covers an area of approximately 220 square kilometers, and its landscape is dominated by lush tropical rainforests, wetlands, and grasslands. The park is also home to the Semuliki River, which meanders through the park and is a lifeline for the local wildlife.
One of the most notable features of Semuliki National Park is the presence of the eastern extension of the Ituri Forest, which is part of the Congo Basin rainforest, one of the oldest and most biodiverse forests in the world.
Flora and Fauna
Semuliki National Park is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including over 400 species of birds and 60 species of mammals. Some of the more commonly seen animals include chimpanzees, elephants, buffaloes, and various species of monkeys. The park is also home to several species of reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies.
One of the park’s most iconic attractions is the Sempaya Hot Springs, a pair of natural geothermal springs that bubble up from the ground and are believed to have healing properties. The springs are located in the heart of the forest and are surrounded by lush vegetation and wildlife.
Activities and Attractions
There are several activities available for visitors to Semuliki National Park, including guided nature walks, bird watching, and chimpanzee tracking. The park also offers opportunities for boat cruises along the Semuliki River and cultural visits to the nearby Batwa pygmies, who are the indigenous people of the area.
Conservation and Community Involvement
Semuliki National Park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which is dedicated to the conservation of the park’s biodiversity and the protection of its wildlife. The UWA also works closely with local communities to promote sustainable tourism and support community development initiatives.
Visiting Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park is easily accessible from the town of Fort Portal, which is located about 50 kilometers south of the park. The park is accessible by road, and the journey from Fort Portal takes about 2-3 hours depending on road conditions.
